The Freedoms We Cherish
The United States Constitution states according to Amendment I:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The United States of America is one of the few places in the world that has a constitutional guarantee for these freedoms. Many people can only dream of having the freedom to express themselves without the fear of punishment or retaliation. We as Americans are very blessed to have this freedom, but this is not without responsibility. These freedoms are very powerful, and they can be great if used right. They have become even more powerful through social media, the music industry, and those figures of fame. However, through the freedom of speech, many have turned to bashing, especially those we do not always agree with.
One prime example of this has come to light – Taylor Swift’s new song “You’ve Got to Calm Down”. In her song, she is bashing Christians, Republicans, and anyone who is speaking out against Homosexuality. It is very sad that this is what it’s coming down to. She has a point though. Many are hating on them because of the way they live their life, and they are quoting Scripture to back up their claims.
So let’s get on the same page.
God is against the act of homosexuality, along with other sexual immorality.
This is stated in 1 Corinthians 6:9 – 10.
“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”
According to this, the sin of sexual immorality is not worse than other sins of immorality. It is the same. All sin of mankind is equal in the eyes of God.
This is shown in Romans 3:10, where it states,
“As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one.’”
This fact continues in Romans 3:23, stating,
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
The only difference between what Christians have and what non-Christians don’t is having accepted the fact we are sinners. Others have decided to embrace it, and they show it off instead of repenting.
God says that repenting is all we need to do, which is stated in 1 John 1:9,
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
So please instead of bashing, let us Christians realize we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God but are only saved by the grace of God through our repentance. Let us also be thankful for the freedom of religion along with the freedom of speech, press, and petition.
